Network+ and CCNA are both networking certifications, but they do not teach networking in the same way.

CompTIA Network+ gives you a broad foundation. It covers how networks work, how they are built, how they are operated, how they are secured, and how they are troubleshot across many kinds of environments.

Cisco CCNA goes deeper into implementation. You spend more time with routing, switching, configuration, verification, command output, and network-device behavior.

Neither choice is better by default. The better choice is the one that matches the skills you need next.

The current CertHappens Network+ material follows N10-009. Cisco currently offers the 200-301 CCNA v1.1 exam through February 2, 2027. The refreshed CCNA v2.0 exam begins February 3, 2027.

Network+ is designed to make the network understandable as a whole.

You learn the major pieces, how they connect, and what to check when something stops working.

  • Ports, protocols, and network services
  • Routing and switching concepts
  • Wired, wireless, cloud, and virtual networking
  • Network operations and monitoring
  • Security controls and segmentation

The current N10-009 objectives put 24% of the exam on Network Troubleshooting and 23% on Networking Concepts.

That balance matters. Network+ is not only about naming technologies. You need to connect symptoms to likely causes and choose a reasonable next step.

A Network+ way of looking at a problem

Suppose several users suddenly cannot reach a business application.

You might ask:

  • Are they on the same network segment?
  • Can they reach the default gateway?
  • Is name resolution working?
  • Is the service reachable by IP address?
  • Did a routing, firewall, or wireless change affect connectivity?
  • Is the failure local to one device, one subnet, or the whole site?

Network+ helps you organize that investigation without assuming one specific network vendor.

5. What CCNA Builds

CCNA expects you to understand networking concepts and then work with them at a deeper implementation level.

The current 200-301 v1.1 exam covers:

You are more likely to work with configuration choices, command output, route selection, switching behavior, and verification steps.

A CCNA way of looking at a problem

Suppose two virtual local area networks (VLANs) should communicate, but hosts in one VLAN cannot reach the other.

  • Check trunk behavior

  • Verify addressing and subnet masks

The underlying networking concepts are not unique to Cisco. The implementation practice is more specific.

There is substantial overlap because both certifications teach networking.

  • I want structured troubleshooting practice without making device configuration the center of my study.
  • My next role needs networking knowledge, but not necessarily day-to-day router and switch configuration.
  • I may move into cybersecurity later and want the network foundation first.

Network+ can be a good confidence builder.

It gives you a map of the networking field. Once that map makes sense, deeper study becomes easier to place.

8. Choose CCNA When

CCNA can be the stronger first networking certification when you are ready for more depth.

Consider CCNA if several of these statements fit:

  • I want networking to be a major part of my job.
  • I want to configure and verify routers and switches.
  • I am comfortable learning through labs and command output.
  • I want deeper practice with route selection, VLANs, trunks, interfaces, and network services.
  • I am targeting a network administrator, network technician, network engineer, or infrastructure role.
  • The employers I am targeting use Cisco technologies or mention CCNA.
  • Basic networking concepts make sense to me.
  • I would rather learn the foundation while applying it in a more hands-on environment.

Cisco lists no formal prerequisite for CCNA.

That does not mean the exam is a good first exposure to every networking concept. A beginner can start with CCNA, but the study plan needs enough time for both the fundamentals and the implementation details.

9. Do You Need Network+ Before CCNA?

No.

Network+ is not a prerequisite for CCNA.

Some learners earn Network+ first because they want a broad foundation before going deeper. Others start with CCNA and learn the same foundational ideas while practicing Cisco configuration.

Both paths can work.

Network+ first can make sense when

  • You are new to networking.
  • Vendor-neutral understanding matters to you.
  • You want a smaller first step.
  • You are not sure whether networking will become your main specialization.
  • You need networking knowledge for support, systems, cloud, or security more than you need device configuration.

Going to CCNA can make sense when

  • Networking is your clear direction.
  • You learn well through labs.
  • You want configuration and troubleshooting depth now.
  • You understand basic addressing, devices, ports, and network services.
  • A role or employer specifically values CCNA.

Do not collect Network+ only because you think Cisco requires it. Cisco does not.

At the same time, do not skip foundational knowledge. CCNA will not become easier because you avoided learning the basics.

10. Already Have A+? Network+ Can Add a Stackable Credential

If you hold an active CompTIA A+ certification, Network+ has an additional benefit that CCNA does not provide: A+ + Network+ meets the combination for CompTIA IT Operations Specialist (CIOS).

If you later add Security+, the active A+ + Network+ + Security+ combination can also meet the requirements for CompTIA Secure Infrastructure Specialist (CSIS).

That can be useful when Network+ and CCNA are otherwise close choices.

It should not override a clear job requirement.

If the network roles you want specifically ask for CCNA, or you need deeper Cisco configuration skills, CCNA may still be the better use of your study time.

If you want broad vendor-neutral networking and have A+, CIOS is a reasonable extra benefit to count.

11. The Hands-On Difference

This is one of the most useful ways to choose.

Network+ asks you to understand technologies from a broad operational perspective.

CCNA makes configuration and verification more central to the learning process.

For example, both certifications may expect you to understand VLANs.

With Network+, you should know why VLANs are used, how trunks carry multiple VLANs, how segmentation affects traffic, and what common failures look like.

With CCNA, you may also need to read or build configuration, verify trunk status, interpret interface output, and determine why the expected VLAN traffic is not moving.

If that second kind of work sounds interesting, CCNA may fit you better.

If it sounds like more depth than your current job needs, Network+ may be the more efficient choice.

12. Which One Is Harder?

For many beginners, CCNA requires more hands-on depth.

That does not make Network+ easy. N10-009 covers a wide range of topics and expects troubleshooting judgment.

CCNA adds more configuration, verification, and detailed routing and switching work. You often need to know not only what a technology does, but how its behavior appears on a network device.

Your background changes the answer.

Someone who has configured Cisco networks for a year may find CCNA material familiar. Someone with broad help-desk experience but little command-line networking may find Network+ much more approachable.

Choose based on the skills you need, not on which exam has the harder reputation.

13. Practical Study Orders

There is no required certification ladder.

New to networking and still exploring IT

A reasonable path is:

Network+ → decide whether deeper networking is useful → CCNA if needed

You gain the broad foundation first and make the second decision with more context.

New to networking but committed to a network role

You can go directly to CCNA.

Build the fundamentals carefully. Do not rush through addressing, subnetting, Ethernet, switching, and routing just to reach configuration commands.

A reasonable path is:

Networking fundamentals → CCNA labs and study → CCNA

You do not have to buy a Network+ voucher to learn Network+ level concepts.

IT support, systems, or cloud work

Network+ may give you enough depth if networking supports your job but is not the job itself.

If your responsibilities grow into network implementation, CCNA can become the next step.

Security goal

Strong networking knowledge helps security work.

Network+ is often enough when you need to understand traffic, services, segmentation, and troubleshooting.

CCNA can be valuable when your security work touches network engineering, firewalls, routing, enterprise infrastructure, or deeper traffic analysis.

Already have Network+

Do not keep repeating the same level of study.

If you want deeper networking work, move into CCNA labs and configuration.

If your goal is security, cloud, or systems administration instead, another certification may produce more value than a second networking credential.

14. The CCNA Exam Changes in February 2027

Cisco currently offers 200-301 CCNA v1.1 through February 2, 2027.

The refreshed CCNA v2.0 goes live February 3, 2027.

Cisco says the refresh is not a complete overhaul. The published v2.0 direction puts more emphasis on practical assessment, troubleshooting, security, and artificial intelligence (AI) across the networking material.

If you are preparing for v1.1 and plan to test by February 2, Cisco's guidance is to keep going rather than stop and wait.

15. Common Mistakes When Choosing Between Them

Assuming CCNA is a harder Network+

It is not a direct upgrade.

There is overlap, but CCNA changes the style and depth of the work. Cisco implementation and configuration become much more important.

Choosing Network+ only because it seems easier

A smaller first step can be useful.

But if your goal is network engineering and you know the basics, going to CCNA may save time.

Choosing CCNA only because employers recognize the name

A respected certification does not replace the foundation needed to understand it.

If basic networking is still confusing, build that foundation instead of memorizing commands without context.

Treating vendor-neutral as meaning more complete

Vendor-neutral study gives you breadth across technologies.

It does not give you the same configuration depth as a vendor-focused certification by itself.

Treating vendor-focused as meaning the knowledge only works on Cisco equipment

Routing, switching, addressing, segmentation, troubleshooting, and many other CCNA concepts transfer beyond Cisco.

The specific command syntax does not always transfer. The networking reasoning often does.

Studying without building or troubleshooting anything

Networking becomes easier to understand when you can see it work.

Use labs, packet captures, diagrams, command output, or real equipment where practical. Even small experiments can turn memorized definitions into useful knowledge.

Exam versions, objectives, prices, and policies can change. Check the official sources before buying a voucher or choosing exam-specific study material.
